Biologists with the Alaska Department of Fish & Game in Douglas announced an early closure to the moose hunting season in that area west of Excursion Inlet and north of Icy Passage (commonly referred to as the Gustavus hunt area) of Game Management Unit 1(C). This area is managed under the RM049 registration permit.
An Emergency Order (01-04-10) was issued that closed the moose season in this area on Sunday, October 3, 2010 at 11:59PM.
A guideline harvest objective of 15 bull moose was established by ADF&G for the Gustavus hunt area. As of Friday morning, October 1, 2010, 13 bulls have been taken. In anticipation that the harvest will meet or exceed the 15 bull moose guideline harvest level, the hunt is being closed to prevent additional animals from being taken. This closure will assist managers in maintaining an adequate bull to cow ratio during the breeding period.
All other moose hunting regulations in Unit 1C remain unchanged and are not affected by this Emergency Order.
