The Alaska Department of Fish and Game announces an emergency order closure of the State registration moose hunt in Unit 22C by permit RM850 at 11:59 p.m. September 19, 2010. The portion of Unit 22C closed by this emergency order includes the antlerless moose hunt in the Nome and Snake River drainages.
The Department established a harvest quota of 7 antlerless moose for registration permit hunt RM850 in the portion of Unit 22C that includes the Nome and Snake River drainages. The spring 2010 moose census in Unit 22C estimated calf:adult ratios at 20 calves:100 adults. Hunt RM850 is one of 2 antlerless moose hunts held annually in Unit 22C to slow population growth in the area and each hunt uses harvest quotas to minimize overharvest of the antlerless segment of the population.
Current reported harvest for Hunt RM850 hunt is 5 antlerless moose and the harvest quota of 7 is expected to be reached by the season closing date announced in this emergency order. No further harvest is warranted at this time.
Registration Hunt RM852 for antlerless moose in the Remainder of Unit 22C remains open at this time, and permit holders can hunt until the harvest quota of 16 antlerless moose is reached or until the season closing date of September 30 if the harvest quota is not reached.
All other moose hunting regulations in Unit 22 remain unchanged by this emergency order.
