The Alaska Department of Fish and Game announces an emergency order closure of the State Registration moose hunt RM849 in western Unit 22B at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, January 4, 2010. The area affected by this closure is Unit 22B west of the Darby Mountains, including the Fish and Niukluk River drainages, Council, White Mountain, and Golovin. (Note: this area is identified as the Remainder of Unit 22(B) in the hunting regulations booklet.)

Since 1987 the moose population in western Unit 22B has declined by 64% and recruitment rates have been below 10% for over 15 years. To help stabilize this population, the Alaska Board of Game established a moose registration permit hunt in western Unit 22B and the department set a harvest quota of 23 bulls. The winter portion of registration permit hunt RM849 opened January 1 with a harvest quota of 5 antlered bulls. On January 4, the reported harvest was 5 antlered bulls. Since harvest quota has been reached, the season will be closed. No additional harvest is warranted.

The season will also be closed on Federal public land in western Unit 22(B).
